Loose Ends

Long time, no post.

Since last time, the reign of Dischord and Dynne has come to a close — live acts will continue next semester at the same time (Fridays @ 10pm EST), but a different DJ will be at the helm. Be sure to still tune in!

Now, for some closure:

First up, here are the Peace Creeps and The High Seas performances from a few weeks back. Also, the Dry Hump recording has been available for a little while, though I've never explicitly posted about it.

I've uploaded a lot of old performances to Mediafire and linked to them from the side bar, so be sure to snag any performances that you may have missed. I'm still trying to round up a few of the missing ones, and I'll be sure to post them when/if I find them.

Next up, over at WHRB we're in the full swing of Orgy season, where we devote large chunks of air (anywhere between 5 - 40+ hours) to a single artist, genre, record label, or idea. Some great ones have already taken place, including Slumberland, Jonathan Richman, and the Old Time Radio Plays. A full listing of Orgies for this season can be found in our Program Guide at whrb.org

Tonight is the second to last night of the 25 Years of Record Hospital Orgy, where we're recapping each of RH's 25 years of existence through relevant music, guest sets and stories from alumni, and whatever else we see fit. Starting tonight at ~9:15pm (i.e. now) we'll be plowing through the end of the 90s and into the early 2000s. It all wraps up tomorrow night, so be sure to tune in from 11pm til we wrap up at 5am.

Lastly, just want to put in a little plug for my own orgy coming up this weekend. On the nights of Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10th & 11th, WHRB will be highlighting the work of one of my favorite labels (even disregarding the fact that they're from Ohio, which is fantastic) Columbus Discount Records. Thanks to the generous guys at CDR, we'll be playing through their entire catalog (including those rare Singles Club releases) and doing some dramatic readings of interviews throughout the course of the night. Be sure to tune in!

Something old, something new

Some bad news: Hospital Rats is on hiatus as of this past week. Because of this, they've had to cancel for D&D on the 30th. A replacement should be found soon, though -- be sure to check for updates.

On a lighter note, I'm happy to announce that The High Seas will be joining us in studio on November 20th, just before the week of Thanksgiving. No snarky comments relating to this, just pure facts.

Change in Schedule

First off, I'd like to apologize for the delay in posting the Foreign Objects and Alessa sets. Thesis has recently consumed my life, but they will be up tomorrow night at about 10pm EST. I'll be back to posting performances less than a week after they occur from now on.

Second matter of business--
Hospital Rats will no longer be playing on October 30th due to some changes in lineup. Here's hoping they fill can fill in the holes and get back to performing soon.

Lastly,
Just wanted to announce an awesome show happening right in Harvard Square. On Friday, November 6th, at 6pm Iron Lung, Mind Eraser, SQRM, and Dry Hump will be performing in Holden Chapel, same place as night two of RH Fest last year. $8 suggested donation for touring bands; no booze or substances. Flyer to come soon.
There will be no band on the air on this night due to a sharing of equipment & staff. Come say hey!

Daniel Striped Tiger and Sinaloa, Summer Update

So, as you may have noticed, Waste Management unfortunately had to cancel for the 17th. Luckily, though, our last live performance until September -- a tag team of DST and Sinaloa -- was still in the cards. This past Friday, both bands stopped in to play as long as possible given our time restrictions.

Sadly as I mentioned previously, this will be Dischord and Dynne's last live act until early September, as I'll be heading home for summer vacation at the end of May. Candace and I will still be playing some tunes yet for you all this coming Friday (May 1st), and then Orgy season will begin on Saturday. Exusamwa / RH Fest

Exusamwa recording now up for download, complete with skits, ukuleles, croaking stuffed frogs, and all.
This was all performed while wearing shredded trash bags, not pink skin suits. I'm guessing that may not come through in the recording. Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to their set at Fest this Friday.

L'Antietam, Fest Updates

L'Antietam ripped last night. I'm really bummed the set couldn't be longer because of our 11pm cutoff, and that I didn't get a chance to battle any of the guys in Super Smash Brothers.

The show went really well -- thanks to all that came out! I personally had a lot of fun -- it was great to get to put on a show for guys I've respected/enjoyed since high school. Pictures can be found here.
Andy and Aaron, the singer and drummer from The Saddest Landscape respectively, are also in Her Breath on Glass, a band that follows in the same emo-y vein of TSL. I picked up a few of their discs at the show, including the HBOG/Khere split, and am so glad I did. According to Andy, Khere consists of half of La Quiete. Fun stuff.

It is more than likely that some combination of TSL and/or HBOG will be coming in for an in-station and playing fest. More news on that as it develops.

Anyway, on to a few D&D updates!

Planned Communities are coming in-station tomorrow, so be sure to tune in at 10pm est.

Downloads from Magic People (2-6-09) and Closet Fairies (2-20-09) are now posted on the bar to the right. The Closet Fairies recording might actually be pressed into a 7" by their label, so keep an eye out for that as well as their upcoming "full length" that they recorded the day after the performance.

Lastly, L'Antietam has been moved from March 6th to March 20th, and Waste Management has been scheduled for April 17th, filling out the calendar for the rest of the academic year. In short, that's most likely all, folks!

Sorry about this, guys, but due to a mix-up on my part L'Antietam will actually be playing on March 6th, not Daniel Striped Tiger.
I'm stoked about the date regardless of my mistake and hope to announce a new DST date in the near future.

Also, there will be no band this Friday since I'll be heading to the Total Abuse, Failures, Daniel Striped Tiger, and Scapegoat show at Oxfam Cafe at Tufts the same night, 7pm.

Weird Fat USA.

RH just got the latest (and much delayed) Fat Day record at the station, Iguanadonaland, dropped off by former guitarist and RH dj Doug DeMay. Can't wait to see this top our charts.

Conveniently enough, today another of Doug's projects was confirmed to play on Dischord and Dynne in the near future. Exusamwa, featuring Doug (Fat Day), Angela (Weirdo Records), Nell MaLuf (Goat of Arms), and Neil Coletta (Ergot Rot). They only have a 3 inch CDr at this point, but will be recording new material in the next month and appearing on WHRB shortly thereafter-- Friday, April 3rd.

Also, following this tangent-- Weirdo Records will be opening their store on 844 Mass Ave, Cambridge, this coming Friday, February 6th. They'll be having their official opening party on February 14th with live music from Burnt Hills & Baby Jesus Burnout and djing during the rest of the night. Drop by if you're in the area!

Orgies and FESTation

It's that time of year-- the post-holiday crunch, the time when thousands of undergrads make their way back to Cambridge (I'm pretty sure we're the only place to do this anymore) only to have their hopes, dreams, and sleep schedules crushed by papers and exams.

On that note, hope everyone had a great holiday.

Anyway--
a few matters of outstanding business:

Got Laid

Great time last night. Thanks to the band for coming out, and especially to Shannon for roughing it with her knee.

Also, the bassist, Alex, is one of the members of H.E.L.L., a non-profit group that gives out free helmets to those in need (i.e. everyone who rides who doesn't have a helmet), and there's a sweet benefit show coming up for the organization.

Saturday, Dec. 13th, at the Papercut Zine Library (45 Mt. Auburn St. in Cambridge). I'm not sure the lineup listed on the flier is completely accurate, but the other info is-- early show and only $5 for a great lineup, whatever the final one ends up being.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately; it's been super busy around these parts. Hopefully after mid-next week I can get back (or start) posting regularly, oi.

At any rate, here's Made in Mexico's live set from two Fridays ago. The night was a lot of fun; I love it when there's a crowd of people in the studio, and the band bringing their own lighting (first ever) was a nice touch.
The set features a lot of songs off the new album Guerillaton, so be sure to check it out on Skingraft Records-- the LP packaging is die cut and, I think, is actually costing them money to put out, so you should buy it even if you dislike the disc, if only in an attempt to bankrupt them. That is my two cents.

Walled in and Made up

Big thanks to everyone who came out to the Walls show, and especially to Scot for sending the show my way. Each band put on a spectacular show and I'm really glad we got to help out with the event.
I want to apologize to everyone who got turned away-- the cage was filled to maximum capacity pretty early, but luckily we were able to let a few more in as others deserted throughout the course of the night.
I lost my camera a bit ago so unfortunately I can't provide pictures, but some pretty good shots from the night can be found on Catherine's blog and various other places around the internet.

I was both bummed and relieved that some people ended up leaving after Mind Eraser played. On one hand, Walls didn't play to a packed cage, but on the other hand, people didn't have to watch them play in a packed cage. The turnout and energy were still amazing, though, and the Cold Sweat reunion at the end was definitely something to experience.

I picked up a couple 7"s from Quinn's distro I-Deal, as well as the new Walls LP at the show, and can't wait to give them all a listen within the next few days. Be sure to call in to the station (617-495-WHRB) and request to hear the new stuff.

Anyway, last update--
Made in Mexico will be stopping by this Friday to play some songs over the air. They'll be playing some tracks off their latest album, Guerillaton, so it'll be a great way to preview the disc. I'm pretty excited about this, as I've been trying to coax these guys in for almost a year now. FRUITION!
As always, shit will get started at 10pm and the recording will be up for download on this page after the broadcast.

A plethora of WHRB downloads and a few Fucked Up covers

You want downloads? I've finally got 'em.

Check out Ho-Ag's performance from 10/3 and the set from Eunuch on 10/24. These will also be up on the Record Hospital website sometime within the next week.

The Big Big Bucks played a great set in-station last Friday to a pretty sizable crowd for our in-station standards. Be sure to grab the performance here and to check out their new full length that will be coming out soon. Keep an eye on their website for updates.
A big thanks to Jack Younger from Basement 247 Studio in Allston, who helped give me some pointers on the sound and our own equipment. Hopefully I'll be learning some more things from him soon (and possibly interning at the studio), so that should be fun. I also feel like this is the best quality recording I've produced so far, so I'm pretty happy with how things are going. This promises good things for Made in Mexico on the 21st.

Last matter of actual business-- RH/Girly Shit is helping put on what promises to be a killer show at the Quincy Cage this Friday, so we won't be having a band in-station. Candace will still be playing tunes, but I'll be helping set up/ playing doorman for the punx instead.

A couple of updates before I get time to flesh them into legitimate posts...

First off, Eunuch utterly slayed last Friday in-station. Big thanks to the girls for playing and sticking around to help dj. Definitely probably the first time that Whodini has graced an RH time. I'll be posting mp3s from their performance soon.

Next up, news on live performances. Today both Big Big Bucks and Made in Mexico confirmed dates for performances-- check out the updated info to your right for dates.

Zola Jesus - Poor Sons 7" (Die Stasi)

Today I received a package from Die Stasi, one of my favorite record labels only in part because it's so close to my heart. The label is run by Lane Hooker out of Findlay, Ohio-- just 40 minutes north of my hometown, and where most of my family currently resides. How sentimental, right?

Anyway, I've enjoyed a lot of their releases over the past year (the growing catalog includes 7"s from the Wrists, the Frustrations, and both a 7" and LP from Television Ghost), but the two discs I received today-- the Zola Jesus Poor Sons 7" and Leper Print's single Coma-- are both my favorites of the Die Stasi releases so far. The label basically defines what I love about the midwest right now-- lots of fuzz, distance, and dissonance, and enough of a creep-out to make it memorable. Check them out if you're into anything along the likes of Psychedelic Horseshit, Blank Dogs, Cheveu, etc.

As for the releases themselves, Zola Jesus has been my favorite of the two so far.

Hailing from Wisconsin, the "band" on recordings is made up of a single member, Nika. Her haunting vocals mixed over simple, piano-driven beats serve to make the tracks sound as if they were the favorite 80s soundtrack you were trying to remember through the distortion of years of drug-induced haze.
